Imagine venturing through eerie, battle-ravaged landscapes with the ability to wield customizable weaponry and tap into mysterious powers. It’s incredible to think that Trench Tales, an intriguing blend of horror and shooting, comes from the creative mind of a solo developer. While it echoes the atmospheric dread of Resident Evil, Trench Tales stands out with its World War I setting and gunplay focus, appealing to fans of Battlefield 1 and Sniper Elite. Now, its developer is on the lookout for playtesters to refine this captivating experience.
Trench Tales transports you to an alternate history at the tail end of the First World War. As a lone soldier in the desolate region of Verden, you are driven by a need to uncover truths and find a way out. However, this isn’t your typical war game rooted in pure realism. Mysterious energies pervade the battlefield, bringing fallen soldiers back to life and introducing menacing warlords. The enemies you face are fueled not just by opposition, but by a dark force that reanimates them.
You’ll wield WW1-era guns, but with a twist—these weapons can be extensively modified courtesy of Trench Tales’ detailed gunsmith system. To survive, you’ll also harness dark magical abilities. Whether you’re enhancing your healing, tracking foes through walls, or manipulating time, these powers are at your disposal to tip the scales in your favor.
Although Trench Tales doesn’t boast the expansive scale of the Battlefield franchise, it does feature some compelling environmental destruction. Blow a hole in a wall to carve out a new line of sight or escape route, but tread carefully—enemies may hear your explosive handiwork.
Talking Drums, the one-person powerhouse behind Trench Tales, has already held an initial playtest and is preparing for the next one. If you participated before, you’ll automatically be included in this round, but new testers can also sign up through the game’s Steam page.
Mark your calendars; the Trench Tales playtest kicks off on Friday, April 18, and wraps up sometime the following week, as hinted by Talking Drums.
