Ubisoft, the well-known French publisher, is rumored to be working on a battle royale game designed to compete directly with Apex Legends.
According to Insider Gaming, this new project, which goes by the codename “Scout,” has taken significant inspiration from Respawn and EA’s popular title. In fact, there was a time when the artwork for Scout could easily have been mistaken for Apex Legends due to its resemblance. Reports also suggest that the characters in this upcoming game share quite a few similarities with those from Apex Legends. It seems Ubisoft has been quietly working on this venture for a while now.
The strategy here appears to be Ubisoft’s attempt to attract players from Apex Legends. Electronic Arts, the publisher behind Apex, has acknowledged a dip in the game’s financial performance, which might indicate an opportunity for Ubisoft to capture some of that audience. A source within Ubisoft commented, “The intention seems to be to take advantage of the declining player base in Apex, and there’s a belief among Ubisoft executives that there’s room for another hero Battle Royale in the market.”
This isn’t Ubisoft’s first attempt at creating a free-to-play battle royale game. Back in 2020, they launched Hyperscape, but it only lasted about 18 months before being shut down. More recently, the company decided to discontinue XDefiant, another free-to-play shooter, with the closure set for the end of 2024.
Looking ahead, fans of Apex Legends can anticipate a 2.0 iteration of the game, slated for release sometime after April 2026.
