As the PlayStation 5 cements its place as the go-to console for PlayStation enthusiasts, support for the older PS4 is gradually winding down. A popular MMORPG is joining that trend, bidding farewell to its last-generation version, though players won’t be left in the lurch—they can transition to the current-gen version without any additional cost.
Pearl Abyss recently shared that it’s preparing to sunset the PS4 and Xbox One editions of Black Desert Online. If you’re still adventuring in this MMORPG on these consoles, you’ve got a few more months to enjoy it before the world shifts focus to the newer consoles. Mark your calendars, as the PS4 and Xbox One versions will officially shut down during the maintenance window on June 26. Don’t worry about losing progress; players can upgrade at no charge, with all account data and in-game purchases carrying over to the new version.
“Your game data is safe with us,” reassures Brian Choi, the Black Desert Console Live Service Manager, regarding the transition to the PlayStation 5. “All your account details and everything you own in Black Desert will be right there when you’re ready to make the leap to the PS5 or Xbox Series. We know this might be disappointing news for some. However, we’ve been continuously updating the game to ensure adventurers have an enriching experience.”
Choi elaborates, “Despite our best efforts to enhance performance and content for the older consoles, we’ve hit the limits of what this hardware can handle. It’s become challenging to deliver the latest content seamlessly. Thus, we’ve decided to direct our focus toward the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, where we can offer a more stable and enhanced experience.”
When Black Desert Online first landed in the U.S. back in 2016, it stirred up a mixed bag of reviews. Metacritic shows it scored an average of 73 from 35 critic reviews at the time. It wasn’t until 2019 that it appeared on the PS4 and Xbox One, paving the way for the adventure to continue on current-generation consoles.
