The curtain is about to fall on MultiVersus, the vibrant crossover fighting game. Warner Bros. Games made the announcement on Friday that MultiVersus is wrapping up development, with the game scheduled to go offline on May 30, coinciding with the end of the fifth season.
Fans need not worry too much, though—MultiVersus will still be playable offline. You’ll be able to engage in local matches or test your skills against AI opponents, according to the publisher. However, come May 30 at 9 a.m. PDT, the game will no longer be available for download. In a move that underscores the end of an era, Warner Bros. Games has also halted all real-money purchases for the game, which means the premium currency, Gleamium, is now off the table for players.
Season 5 is set to be a dynamic finale, introducing two fresh faces to the character lineup: Aquaman from DC Comics and Lola Bunny from Looney Tunes. Warner Bros. Games has assured that players can unlock all the content from this season, including the new characters, simply by playing. Mark your calendars because this exciting final season is launching on February 4.
In a heartfelt message, Warner Bros. Games expressed their gratitude to everyone who has played and supported MultiVersus. “We want to thank every player and person who has ever played or supported MultiVersus,” the company mentioned. “All of us on the Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games teams have poured our heart and soul into this game. We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey.”
Debuting in July 2022, MultiVersus initially came out as an open beta. Fast forward about a year, Warner Bros. and Player First took the game offline to overhaul key elements like the netcode, matchmaking, and progression system, alongside working on new characters, maps, and modes to keep the content fresh. The game made its return in May 2024 featuring a slew of changes and new characters. Unfortunately, not all the changes resonated with players, and while the game enjoyed strong launches, its popularity waned as indicated by data from Steam Charts and Twitch viewership.
Once season 5 concludes, MultiVersus will boast an impressive roster of 35 characters across diverse film, TV, and comic book franchises. Inspired by the successful Smash Bros. formula, the game features beloved personalities such as Batman, Superman, Rick and Morty, Shaggy and Velma from Scooby Doo, and the classic duo, Tom and Jerry. Since its 2024 return, the game has diversified its lineup even further with characters like Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th, Agent Smith from The Matrix, the Powerpuff Girls, Beetlejuice, and others.
Free to play, MultiVersus remains available for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X, ensuring fans can continue to enjoy this eclectic mix of characters for a bit longer.
