Nintendo is confident that the announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2 hasn’t dented the sales of their original Switch console. This insight comes after a shareholder inquired why the company decided to adjust its financial expectations for the year, specifically lowering both hardware and software sales predictions by 1.5 million and 10 million units, respectively.
Addressing these concerns, Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, explained, “After closely reviewing our sales in the third quarter (October to December 2024) and predicting the rest of the fiscal year’s trajectory, we felt it necessary to revise our sales forecasts.” He went on to clarify, “We also took another look at our assumed exchange rate and updated it from 140 yen to 150 yen per U.S. dollar. These adjustments led us to adjust our annual financial outlook.”
The Switch has truly made its mark, with over 150 million units sold, creating a strong user base. At the start of this fiscal year, Nintendo had ambitious plans, fueled by an enticing lineup of new titles and a wide array of evergreen games, not to mention a community of more than 100 million annual active users.
During the festive season, fresh titles like Super Mario Party Jamboree saw impressive sales globally. Outside of Japan, the hardware bundled with games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe performed well. Despite these steady numbers for an eight-year-old platform, the sales didn’t quite hit the high targets initially set for the year.
Admittedly, Furukawa noted that the looming release of the Nintendo Switch 2 did cause some consumers to delay their purchases. However, there were still plenty of new buyers and existing users who upgraded or bought additional systems during the holiday wave.
In terms of software, while there has been a year-on-year decline, Furukawa believes that the anticipation for the Nintendo Switch 2 hasn’t drastically impacted sales since the upcoming console will support existing Switch games. The dip in their software sales forecast also owes to the absence of a blockbuster title like the previous year’s The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom or Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which could generate major buzz and elevate overall sales.
