Yesterday, a notable collaboration between iFixit and Microsoft was announced, focusing on extending the lifespan of Xbox Series and Xbox Series X consoles. This partnership introduces official repair parts accessible to gamers globally, an initiative aimed at reducing electronic waste and keeping these consoles in action for longer.
Through this partnership, a dedicated page for repair parts has been set up catering to both disc and digital Xbox Series models, with detailed guides on how to install each component included. While many components are priced between $20 to $60, the cost of essential parts like the motherboard assembly is quite hefty, sometimes matching the cost of a new console. Take, for instance, the Series S US motherboard assembly priced at $299.99—the same as a new Series S console—while the Series X motherboard assembly costs $599.99, slightly over the price of a new Xbox Series X console, which retails at $499.99.
The pricing strategy seems puzzling; a new console, with its added benefits like a controller and a one-year warranty, appears to be more economically sensible compared to replacing a motherboard. Accessory replacement parts, such as those for controllers, also come with a steep price tag. An Xbox Series S/X controller motherboard costs $29.99, equivalent to buying a new Xbox wireless controller on sale.
Repairing specialized or collector’s edition consoles might justify these costs, but for the average user, replacing the motherboard ends up being more costly and cumbersome than simply acquiring a new console. Thankfully, other repair options are much more economically viable, despite the high price of motherboards. iFixit expands beyond just the console, offering replacement parts for Xbox Series controllers, which were not available with previous Xbox versions.
“We’re thrilled to collaborate with Microsoft to enhance the longevity of Xbox consoles and minimize waste,” iFixit Director of Sustainability Liz Chamberlain remarked. Since partnering with Microsoft last year on the Surface parts initiative, iFixit has empowered customers to repair their Microsoft laptops and tablets, and now it’s extending this opportunity to Xbox users as well.
iFixit’s dedication to simplifying electronic repairs is commendable. In a recent review, we awarded the iFixit Fixhub Portable Soldering Station a 4-star rating, highlighting its superb soldering capabilities, robust battery, and precise power distribution, alongside its repair-friendly design featuring USB C connectors.
Repair professionals, especially those dealing with consoles, might find this soldering station a valuable asset for working with the now-accessible Xbox replacement parts from iFixit. However, there are more budget-friendly options for getting started with soldering, and iFixit’s guides are designed to be effective regardless of the tools you choose, ensuring anyone can tackle repairs with confidence.
