This May marks a significant milestone in the world of gaming: it’s been two decades since the Fate series first introduced players to its enchanting game universe. Since debuting in 2005, this beloved dungeon crawler has seen players rise as heroic figures, vanquishing countless beasts lurking beyond the Dungeon Gate. Over time, Fate has not only crafted cherished childhood memories but also influenced aspiring game developers, establishing a notable presence in the action RPG realm. The original creators of Fate later went on to create Torchlight, another big hit in the world of dungeon crawlers.
Considering its lasting impact on gaming culture, it’s only fitting that Fate’s 20th anniversary be celebrated with something as exceptional as the series itself—a vibrant and faithful remaster that echoes why fans fell in love with it initially.
Enter Fate: Reawakened, set to launch on March 12 for Xbox Series X|S, a definitive version that bundles all four existing Fate games into one adrenaline-fueled package.
The Rise of Fate
Back when it first hit the scene, Fate emerged as a breath of fresh air in the action RPG genre. While many games of the era tended to be dark and brooding, Fate stood out with its bright, colorful art style, which resonated especially well with younger audiences and families.
At one point, the game was even pre-installed on several Windows computers, significantly boosting its accessibility and popularity over the years. Players eagerly explored the endless challenges within the dungeon’s depths, all the while enjoying the company of their adorable pet companions.
As Fate’s fanbase grew, so did its community. Even though a new game hasn’t been released since 2011, fans continue to stay active on platforms like Discord, YouTube, and social media, further proving the enduring impact of this series. With such an engaged fanbase, when the chance arose to reinvigorate the franchise, the excitement was palpable.
An Idea is Sparked
The opportunity to revisit the Fate series arose in 2019 following gamigo’s acquisition of WildTangent, the original publishers of Fate. Despite some delays caused by the pandemic, there was a clear desire to honor the franchise thoughtfully. A remaster seemed the perfect tribute to celebrate the 20th anniversary and pull this nostalgic franchise back into the spotlight.
Much has changed since 2005, and although Fate’s gameplay still holds its own, broadening its reach by modernizing it for today’s preferred platforms was paramount. Until now, Fate has been tied to PC, but extending its horizons to consoles and enhancing it with new language support opens the door to an entirely new audience.
A Delicate Undertaking
Revisiting a beloved series can be an ambitious task, but altering the essence of Fate was never the plan. With Fate: Reawakened, the aim was to maintain everything that made the original great while elevating it to new heights.
A significant step in ensuring we preserved the core magic was presenting an alpha demo at PAX West 2024. Many of our booth visitors were either new or longtime fans who had grown up with the game. Their feedback was invaluable. Seasoned players knew the essence and feel of the game, offering insights into what a remaster should and should not do.
Conversely, observing newcomers tackle the demo provided a fresh perspective on potential confusions or hurdles within the game. We entered PAX West eager to showcase our progress and left equipped with a wealth of feedback, improvements, and bug reports that were immensely useful throughout the ongoing development process.
To further hone the remaster, we conducted a closed beta with a select group of enthusiastic Fate community members. Their intimate knowledge of the game facilitated precise feedback that contributed to essential tweaks and refinements. This collaborative dialogue was vital in ensuring the final product did justice to the cherished series.
That said, it’s not just the hardcore fans who have a deep love for Fate. Our development team, too, poured heart and soul into the project. The moody atmosphere of Druantia, in particular, required substantial lighting adjustments to recapture its original charm, ensuring it retained its unique character.
Reawakening Your Inner Hero
Fate: Reawakened is more than just a game; it’s a tribute to the series and its passionate community. We’ve been continually inspired by the creative ways fans have demonstrated their dedication over the years.
