Warner Bros. Games has apparently decided to abandon plans for an expansion of Hogwarts Legacy that had yet to be officially announced. It was initially anticipated to launch in 2025. The popular action-RPG from 2023 was set to receive new content, but it seems the company’s current financial woes have forced several cutbacks, with the DLC being the latest casualty.
After the massive success of Hogwarts Legacy, there was significant interest from Warner Bros. in expanding its lineup of games set in the Wizarding World. Unfortunately, those efforts didn’t quite pan out as expected. Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, for example, launched in September 2024 but failed to make a lasting impact. In the same wave of misfortune, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and MultiVersus also didn’t perform well commercially. Consequently, any hopes for new post-launch content for Hogwarts Legacy seem to have dwindled.
Back in March 2025, reports indicated that Warner Bros.-Discovery’s leadership decided to cancel the DLC as part of some broader restructuring within Avalanche Software. The decision came after determining the planned expansion wasn’t significant enough to justify its proposed price. Along with this, a “Definitive Edition” of Hogwarts Legacy that would have bundled the game with the rumored expansion was also scrapped. Interestingly, the DLC was being developed in collaboration with Rocksteady Studios, aiming to bring back some original content from the base game. This included a storyline centered around one of the game’s companions. Fortunately, it has been confirmed that a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is still actively being developed by Avalanche Software.
This move fits into a larger trend of cost-cutting by Warner Bros. Games in recent months. In February 2025, they also canceled a highly awaited Wonder Woman game and closed down three studios. This included Monolith Productions, known for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. The company has also been dealing with layoffs at Rocksteady Studios following the underwhelming performance of its Suicide Squad live-service game. These financial struggles seem to extend to the higher echelons of the company, with speculations about the potential departure of their president, David Haddad, later in the year.
Despite this gloomy outlook for Hogwarts Legacy’s additional content, fans can remain hopeful about the sequel. Warner Bros. Games has previously highlighted the Wizarding World’s importance in their future plans, indicating that the follow-up game is still on track.
