In the past week, we’ve witnessed a series of intriguing leaks concerning the Nintendo Switch 2’s final design. These rumors reached a crescendo yesterday when Dbrand unexpectedly released a comprehensive 3D render of the Nintendo Switch 2. Interestingly, this render came with a redesigned version of the Dbrand Killswitch carrying case, initially meant for handheld PCs, now adapted for the Switch 2. During a discussion with The Verge, Dbrand CEO Adam Ijaz disclosed that the company had accessed the genuine measurements of the Switch 2. This was achieved through a 3D scan of the actual hardware, resulting in dimensions approximately 270mm wide with the Joy-Cons attached (200mm without), 116mm in height, and 14mm in thickness.
The rumored Nintendo Switch 2 showcases a significantly larger 8-inch screen, upgrading from the Switch OLED’s 7.2-inch and the original Switch’s 6.2-inch displays. It also features an additional “C” button on the right Joy-Con—a possible nod to a capture function. The Joy-Con controllers are set to be magnetically detachable with a more pronounced curve, and the device includes both top and bottom USB-C ports. Plus, there’s a robust U-shaped kickstand reminiscent of the improved stand on the Switch OLED.
As we inch closer to a probable Q1 2025 launch, everything we know indicates that the Switch 2 is a true evolution from the Switch OLED. However, it’s not expected to use an OLED screen; most leaked specifications suggest an 8-inch 1080p IPS LCD, which is hopefully of much better quality than the current Switch’s LCD.
When it comes to the Dbrand Killswitch case for the Switch 2, despite its typically upgraded kickstand and full-body enclosures seen in cases for devices like the Steam Deck, this case takes a different approach. The focus is on accommodating the detachable Joy-Cons, leading to a design that separates into parts using a teal bungee cord to hold everything together. It certainly stands out, and with Dbrand’s solid reputation in the protective case market, the final product is likely to impress.
Of course, there are many among us eager to see a more unaltered glimpse of the Nintendo Switch 2. While we don’t have that just yet, the leaked specs from Dbrand align with a 3D-printed mock-up that was sent to the YouTube channel SwitchUp recently, offering a sense of the device’s look and feel.
In the end, this substantial leak from Dbrand—who appears not to be under any NDA—hints at an imminent official announcement and release date for the Nintendo Switch 2. Past speculation suggests a release before the end of 2024, and Nintendo has promised to reveal Switch 2 details by March 2025. With that deadline fast approaching, companies like Dbrand are gearing up their production efforts and building anticipation for what promises to be Nintendo’s next groundbreaking handheld hybrid console.
