When Snail Games unveiled the trailer for their new expansion, Ark: Aquatica, it was met with a wave of disapproval from the Ark gaming community. Released on Wednesday, the trailer was quickly criticized, and even the original creators of Ark: Survival Evolved, Studio Wildcard, took a step back, making it clear on social media that they weren’t part of this project.
The backlash is largely due to the fact that the trailer seems to have been crafted almost entirely by AI, featuring both video and a mechanical-sounding voiceover that tries to entice players with the promise of “a whole new world” in its underwater setting.
Viewers were quick to notice and call out the strange, AI-driven elements in the Aquatica trailer. Everything appears a bit off-kilter, with characters and creatures moving oddly, limbs twisting unnaturally, and an artificial gloss over the entire production. These flaws weren’t overlooked, and the audience didn’t hold back their critiques.
An influential Ark streamer, The AxeMan, voiced the feelings of many, pointing out the disconnect between Snail Games and the community, urging them to “DO BETTER.”
Alongside the Ark: Aquatica announcement, Studio Wildcard clarified that they had no role in this expansion, posting on their X account: “ARK: Aquatica is being developed by [Snail Games] Colorado, please follow them for more updates. Studio Wildcard remains entirely dedicated to Ark: Survival Ascended & Ark 2, and we’re excited to bring Ark: Lost Colony to you later this year!”
It’s fair to say that the reception of Ark: Aquatica has not matched Snail Games’ aspirations. The expansion, described as a “non-canonical side story” to Ark, is slated for release in June and is pitched as a “family-friendly” experience for newcomers. But, this might only appeal to those willing to embrace the quirks of generative AI.
