Some of us just can’t say no to games where exploration is key. It seems like a lot of these adventurous titles are set in the sci-fi realm, and it’s easy to see why. That backdrop gives us a plethora of worlds to conquer and explore. Though, there’s always a delicate balance to maintain. No one wants to spend hours hovering through a vast, empty galaxy simply because it’s massive. But at the same time, we don’t want our universe littered with endless fetch quests and fluff that just masquerades as content. However, when developers hit that sweet spot, we’re in for one heck of a ride. And that’s where Cubic Odyssey comes in, the intriguing new game we’re diving into today.
Emerging from the creative minds at Atypical Games and published by Gaijin Entertainment, Cubic Odyssey throws us straight into an adventure that kicks off right after we crash-land on an alien planet. From there, it’s up to us to mine resources, refine them into useful materials, and start crafting—from tools and outposts to vehicles—and ultimately, the starships that will unlock free-roaming exploration across the galaxy.
In Cubic Odyssey, at the heart of every star shining in the night is a star system teeming with planets ripe for exploration. Each one boasts its own unique ecosystem and dynamic day and night cycles. You’ll encounter bustling cities filled with NPCs, pirate outposts, and treacherous ruins waiting for brave souls to discover them. The overarching mission in this expansive quest is to halt the spread of “Red Darkness,” a cosmic infection that morphs wildlife, devours entire worlds, and poses a threat to all life forms.
The game boasts seamless transitions between ground, air, and space travel. Players will warp between star systems and zoom across planets at dizzying speeds. On the ground, you can dash across landscapes using speeders or venture into underground mazes and hidden spots on foot. This game is designed to adapt to your adventuring style, offering versatility at every turn.
For those who prefer not to fly solo, Cubic Odyssey has you covered with its optional co-op mode. You and other adventurers can join forces to tackle formidable foes, initiate orbital strikes, or collaborate on constructing massive structures. For players looking to share the fun with friends, this title promises plenty of exciting journeys together.
“We aim to craft an open world that feels limitless, where each planet, every system, and every moment is yours to shape,” says Andrei Lopata, the CEO of Atypical Games based in Bucharest.
Cubic Odyssey seems poised to be a blast for anyone who loves having an almost overwhelming amount of things to do. If interstellar adventures are your calling, you’ll want to keep an eye out for this title, which is slated to land on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X sometime later this year. Stay tuned for more details as we approach its launch.
