How many genres can you blend into a new Steam game before it feels too crowded? Three? Maybe four? Actually, you can mix as many as you want, provided they keep you engaged and deliver a fresh experience. Take Darfall, for example. This upcoming hybrid combines elements of RTS games, city builders, RPGs, and action-packed horde-slaying adventures. So far, this Paradox-backed project seems to be hitting the sweet spot. Its demo on Steam has been leaving players impressed, and with the announcement of Darfall’s release date just around the corner, excitement is building.
Pinning Darfall down to just one genre is a bit of a challenge, and that’s intentional. The game offers two unique gameplay experiences that hinge on its day-night cycle. During daylight, you’ll be busy constructing your settlement, managing your citizens and their work, and venturing out to gather loot and resources. But when darkness falls, it’s a different story—zombified demons and monstrous creatures emerge to attack your settlement. You’ll need to have your defenses ready and master your hero’s skills to fend off these threats. Defending your territory in this RTS-style combat ensures your city survives to see the next day.
Adding more depth to the gameplay, Darfall features a cast of heroes, each with distinct abilities and playstyles. Perhaps you’ll choose Ardan, an elemental wizard wielding powerful spells, or Nariel, an archer with a keen connection to animals and a mighty bow. Whichever hero you play, leveraging their unique strengths is essential. As you advance, you’ll also come across artifacts that bolster your hero’s powers.
Visually and thematically, Darfall draws inspiration from a variety of sources. Set in a fantastical world, the intense nightly battles against ever-growing hordes of the undead give it a bit of a zombie-game vibe. Combined with its choice of a low-poly art style, Darfall stands out from other strategy games released recently.
With a fresh trailer revealing more about the game’s lore and setting the narrative expectations, developers SquareNite and publishers Paradox Arc have shared when fans can expect Darfall to finally arrive.
The game is slated for release on Thursday, May 8. If you’re eager to dive into this adventure before then, the Steam demo is available now. To download it, add Darfall to your wishlist, or find out more about the game, hop over to its Steam page.
