Xbox is betting big on AI to enhance your gaming skills. Just today, they dropped some exciting news on The Official Xbox Podcast about a brand-new AI assistant named “Copilot for Gaming.” This tool is designed to elevate your gaming experience across consoles, mobile devices, and possibly even PCs. Whether you’re in search of a new game or trying to master tricky levels, Copilot for Gaming aims to be your trusty sidekick.
Fatima Kardar from Xbox’s Gaming AI division and Jason Ronald, who heads the Next Generation sector, shared insights on what gamers can expect from this innovation. They noted that gaming, unlike other forms of entertainment, can often leave players feeling stuck. Kardar remarked, “Gaming is the only form of entertainment where you can get stuck, so that’s where you need something to come in and help you move forward.”
The AI assistant is designed to be versatile, offering support across both consoles and the Xbox mobile app. While it’s not confirmed yet whether it’ll be available for PC users, given Xbox’s focus on their “Play Anywhere” initiative, it’s a plausible addition. The goal? To provide a seamless, multi-device gaming experience for users accustomed to juggling multiple screens.
Currently, features of Copilot for Gaming are still in development, with Kardar and Ronald emphasizing its potential through tentative video showcases. These early clips tease features ranging from personalized game recommendations, recaps of previous game saves, to advice during gameplay in titles like Overwatch. For instance, it might suggest which characters to pick or strategies to counter opponents. Check out these concept demos at 15:19 and 17:59 in their video for a taste of what’s coming (they even include a Minecraft demo.)
At launch, Copilot for Gaming is expected to boast around ten unique features. Some enhance existing functionalities, like save-file recaps or recommending new games, while others are game-specific. In Minecraft, for example, it can help players navigate back to missed resources. Ronald adds that it’ll also offer suggestions for new characters and playstyles, tailored to your gaming preferences.
Despite some skepticism around Xbox’s ambitious claims, Kardar emphasizes that they’re still in the early stages, with features not yet finalized. It’s worth noting that other companies like Razer and Nvidia have similar AI helpers, but Xbox hopes to stand out by tapping into more immersive features like recalling old game files.
Kardar added, “It’s not just about AI showing up to help you. It’s about AI arriving at just the right moment. We want to build an experience that’s helpful, not intrusive.” A very preliminary version will soon be available to members of the Xbox Insider Program via the mobile app, allowing for early feedback to guide further development.
Interestingly, while Microsoft’s existing Copilot AI for PCs faced criticism for overpromising and underdelivering, Xbox seems more poised to meet expectations with this gaming edition, assuming they can deliver on today’s ambitious announcements.
