The God of War series initially thrived on its compelling Greek mythology arc, captivating fans for nearly ten years. With a lineup of four main games, three spinoffs, and various collections, it successfully held the audience’s attention. Yet, toward the end of its Greek chapter, the community began to ponder Kratos’ potential next steps, dreaming of him carving a path through other mythical realms.
This exciting potential wasn’t lost on developer Santa Monica Studios. With the release of 2018’s God of War, Kratos found himself battling through a new realm steeped in Norse mythology. And while this saga has reached its conclusion, the anticipation is building once more as fans speculate on Kratos’ next adventure. One popular theory, fueled by recent casting rumors at Sony, suggests the fierce warrior might finally venture into Ancient Egypt. Should this setting become a reality, Kratos would find a pantheon rich with gods ripe for encounters.
Turning our attention to Ancient Egypt’s divine tapestry, we start with Montu—the war god usually depicted as a human with the head of a bull or falcon. Revered by soldiers, Montu was believed to sway battles and heal wounds. In the God of War universe, a confrontation with Montu would echo the roles of Ares in the Greek saga and Tyr in the Norse saga.
Sekhmet, another fierce deity, deserves mention. Heralded as the goddess of war, destruction, and strength, she presents a formidable presence, with influences sometimes extending to pestilence. Imagine Kratos joining forces with Montu to thwart Sekhmet and her allies—such as Horus, the sky and hunting god, and Neith, associated with weaving, war, and hunting.
Interestingly, mythology says that Sekhmet’s calmer side could transform into Bastet, the feline goddess of fertility and childbirth, or Hathor, goddess of love and joy. This twist sets the stage for a gripping narrative arc wherein players initially meet Bastet or Hathor only to later uncover her dual identity as Sekhmet.
Amun, often called “the hidden one,” adds an air of mystery. Initially solitary, Amun eventually merged with the sun god Ra to become Amun-Ra, ascending as a king-like figure of the gods similar to Zeus or Odin from prior sagas.
Then there’s Bes, not your typical god of war but one full of cheer, often portrayed as a dwarf. Protecting children and spreading joy, Bes could become a loyal sidekick in Kratos’ Egyptian journey.
The goddess Ma’at brings another layer with her attributes of truth, justice, and balance. Her demise could spark a gripping storyline where Kratos, alongside other gods, endeavors to restore order amidst the chaos.
Finally, meet Set, epitomizing chaos and violence, having murdered his brother Osiris. Despite his malevolent streak, Set was worshiped for his role in defending Ra from harm. Strategically, Set could emerge as a main antagonist, banding with Sekhmet against Kratos and his divine comrades.
The God of War series, famed for its epic storytelling and immersive mythical battles, stands at a thrilling crossroads. As Kratos possibly embarks on a new conquest across Ancient Egypt, fans can prepare for another masterful odyssey where gods and legends collide—promising intensity, intrigue, and the kind of adventure that keeps us coming back for more.
