Days Gone Remastered is set to hit the PS5 as a digital-only release on April 25. Unfortunately, for those who love stacking their shelves with game cases, there won’t be a physical edition this time around. The original game saw great sales but was met with mixed reviews from critics. Despite its commercial success, Sony wasn’t on board with Bend Studio’s ideas for a sequel. While the possibility of seeing Days Gone 2 remains uncertain, the announcement from the recent PlayStation State of Play offers fans a revamped version to tide them over.
This remastered edition aims to deliver the familiar gameplay of the 2019 PS4 title but brings some enhancements to exploit the PS5’s capabilities. Players can expect crisper visuals, cool new features like DualSense controller support, and some fresh game modes to keep things exciting. There’s an arcade-style horde mode, Permadeath mode, and Speedrun mode, each accompanied by new trophies to earn. Despite these appealing updates, some fans aren’t thrilled with a couple of aspects concerning this release.
The digital-only nature of this remaster has stirred up some controversy. The news came to light in a PlayStation Blog post, sparking dissatisfaction among fans who prefer physical media and often voiced their discontent in the comments. Sony hasn’t shared the reasons behind this decision, leaving gamers who like to hold on to something tangible somewhat let down.
Apart from that, the upgrade path has also raised eyebrows. If you got Days Gone through PS Plus, you’ll have to shell out the full price of $49.99 for the remaster, whereas PS4 owners of the game can upgrade for $10. While this business decision makes sense, not everyone is happy with it.
Still, there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about Days Gone Remastered being a worthwhile update to its 2019 predecessor. Those unwilling to go digital or who prefer not to upgrade can still enjoy playing the PS4 version on their PS5, thanks to backward compatibility. Plus, the original game even got a PS5 update to improve its performance on the newer hardware. It might not include all the flashy new features, but it’s certainly a decent alternative for fans.
With this remaster, there’s hope that it will breathe new life into the franchise, even if the circumstances around its release aren’t entirely what some had hoped for.
